Joint products range from creams to multi-ingredient capsules, and their sales pages often promise to rebuild cartilage or end pain quickly. We compare each product’s label and claims with UK guidance and with systematic reviews of the evidence.
What UK guidance recommends
For osteoarthritis, NICE guideline NG226 recommends therapeutic exercise as a core treatment, weight management where relevant and, for knee osteoarthritis, a topical NSAID gel. NICE advises not offering glucosamine. A 2018 meta-analysis found some supplements gave short-term benefits, but the quality of the evidence was very low.
Supplements are optional extras at best. New, hot, swollen or severely painful joints need a GP.
